Tier-on-tier measuring guide

How to measure for
tier-on-tier shutters

Three measurements — width, height, and where you'd like the tier split. All you need is a tape measure and a few minutes. Don't worry about being precise, that's what our survey is for.

1

Measure the Recess Width

Measure the inside of your window opening from left to right, in millimetres for your width.

2

Measure the Recess Height

Measure from the top of the opening down to the window sill, in millimetres.

3

Measure the Tier Split Height

Measure from the window sill up to where you'd like the tier-on-tier split, in millimetres. This is usually at an existing window midrail or the sash height but generally it is wherever you want the top and bottom shutters to divide.

A few things worth knowing

  • Use a metal tape measure if you have one — fabric ones tend to stretch and won't give you reliable numbers.
  • Measure in millimetres. It's simpler than working with centimetres and decimals.
  • The tier split is measured from the sill upward — not from the top down.
  • Most people position the tier-on-tier point in line with a midrail or sash height in the window, but it's entirely up to you.
  • These are guide measurements for your guide price, so there's no need to worry about being millimetre-perfect. We'll take care of the precise measurements at the survey.
  • Have an older or slightly uneven window? Not a problem — just do your best and let us know when you send through your photos.
